Sea Dogs 2019

Our coaching staff has a combined coaching experience of over 40 years.  We offer a competitive swimming and diving opportunity with a focus on fun.  The Sea Dogs compete in weekly Monday afternoon diving and evening swimming meets with other teams in the Country Club League.  Members may choose to be a member of the swim team, dive team or both.  Practices are on Monday - Friday mornings from early June until mid-July.

Swim Team Philosophy

The Swim Team at Kinsale is a summer club sport. In no way should it be confused with an Olympic training facility. Thus the focus of our swim program will be the following in order of importance:

1. Fun
2. Sportsmanship
3. Good Swimming Techniques
4. Fast Swims

Over the past 40+ years that I have been coaching, I have found that number 4 above usually results as a natural by-product of a strict adherence to numbers 1-3 above.   I do not want to push children at such a young age to the point where they feel the sport not something they want to do anymore.  It is my intention to expose your children to what I feel is one of the best sports.  I feel it is one of the best sports for the following reasons:

1. It is a sport in which one can participate for a lifetime.

2. It is a sport with few injuries because the body’s weight is supported by natural buoyancy.

3. It can be done without having to get others together to form a team.

4. It allows accomplishment on an individual basis so one can measure their own progress.

5. Being an able swimmer opens the door to other sports and activities such as: water polo, scuba diving, water skiing, boating, fishing, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, body surfing, diving, etc… .

6. When your child goes to High School, they will find a group to belong to in order to fit in. I challenge you to find a better group in any High School than the swim team. Every team I have encountered has been hardworking, disciplined, and quite frankly too busy to get into trouble!

I have had many swimmers go on to great accomplishments in the sport but they did so only after enjoying their first experiences.
This is why I feel it is important that we establish realistic expectations for our swimmers and our program.

Developing Swimmers

Most of our swimmers, regardless of age, are still developing swimmers.  While it is a great experience to be on the team, it can not replace the small group instruction of the lesson program.  Almost all of the swimmers on the team would benefit from either SwimAmerica or private lessons.  Unless your swimmer has mastered all four competitive strokes, they should be taking lessons to become better swimmers.

The fee for being a member of the Kinsale Swim or Dive Team is $175 for the season. Cost to be on a second team (dive team) is $100
Developing swimmers, those who are in need of group or private lessons, will be assessed an additional fee of $120.00, if NOT enrolled in 3 weeks of group lessons or 2 private lessons each week during the season. Coach Thom will notify the parents of swimmers in need of lessons. Please contact him with any questions.

No team apparel is required, however there are a plethora of items, including the team suit, that can be ordered in the pro shop at the club.
All Sea Dog Merchandise at The Signature Shop.

Please direct any other questions to Thom Green, the Aquatics Director.

  • Attendance
    • Attendance

Summer is a busy time for us all and each family has different time requirements.   For this reason I set forth no requirements for attendance.   This being said, a swimmer’s achievements can directly be tied to their level of effort in practice.  In the past we have had parents ask me why their child could not perform a skill, such as the butterfly stroke, and our answer sometimes is that we have done it in practice several times but your child was not in attendance.  It is our recommendation that you establish a goal with your child that they will attend 2, 3, 4 or 5 practices a week and stick to it.   You can use this as a way to teach your child the important skills of commitment, discipline and scheduling.  Each Sunday you may want to discuss with your child which days that week they will be attending, set the schedule for the week, and then work with your child to adhere to it. It really can be a great way to develop an important part of your child’s maturing process.

      Meet Participation

It is very important that you sign your swimmer up to participate in every meet.  The coaches make the lineup well before the day of the meet.  Due to problems in the past, we have found it is best to have parents sign up for meets they will attend rather than those they will not.  The sign up list will be posted near the front desk of the pool the Wednesday before the Monday meet.
If your swimmer is not signed up they may not be able to swim in the meet.

Must have passed station 4 in the SwimAmerica program and must be concurrently enrolled in that program through station 7 to strengthen their swimming skills.  Due to the high swimmer/teacher ratio, it is not possible to teach your child to swim in the developmental practice.

Swim Team cannot be a replacement for swim lessons.  Any child on the swim team who has not passed through station 7 is expected to be enrolled in SwimAmerica group lessons or taking private lessons from one of our staff concurrently with the swim team.  You will be contacted to enroll in lessons if this is not the case.  If your child does not attend 4 weeks of group lessons or meet a private lesson equivalent agreed upon by the head coach by the end of the lesson period, your account will be billed for 4 weeks of group lessons.  Participation in the swim team is an agreement to this policy.

      Swim Meets

Any swimmer who wants to swim in a meet must sign up on the Available Swimmer List near the pool office on the Wednesday before Tuesday meets.  This is the only way we will know who can swim in the meet.
If your child has not signed up for a meet we can not assure a spot in the lineup.

Swim meets are held on Tuesdays in the late afternoon and evening.  Warmups will begin at 4:30 and the meet will start at 5:30 unless otherwise notified.  A pool party for the swimmers and divers will be held at the conclusion of each home meet and some of the away meets.

Warm-ups are one hour before each meet.  It is important that your child be at the pool promptly one hour before the meet as we have several items we need to accomplish before we start the meet.
      1. The child's name and event numbers need to be written on their hands and arms
      2. The children must be warmed up in shifts as we have use of only half of the pool
      3. The medley relays need to be organized and staged to start the meet

Your child will spend some down time during the meet between their events.  During this time:
      1. Children must stay in the BULLPEN area.  This is important so the bullpen workers
can find your child for their next event.  Bullpen workers are setting up several events in
advance so please don't try to "time it" so your child is there on time.  Please keep your
      child in the bullpen.
      2. Children should be given some activity to bring to help occupy this down time.  Small
games with few pieces, cards, Gameboys, etc. are excellent to keep the idle minds
      3. Please send a healthful snack for your child to nibble on during the meet.  Please
don't feed your child from the snack bar or buffet until the meet is over.

      Meet Days
Meet sign-ups will be done on a googlesheet that will be sent via email.

      After the Meet
For home swim meets we will be having a party with a D.J. and a buffet.  We will invite the other team to stay and join us in a swim beneath the stars.  If you like this idea, cast your vote for it by participating.  There will be a charge for the buffet but the party is free.  Please plan on attending and participating to show your spirit.

Note: The intention of the party is that it is a private party for the swim team members only.  We ask that the siblings of team members who are old enough to be on the team but have chosen not to participate please refrain from attending.

      Diving Dual Meets

Dive meets will be conducted prior to the swim meets.  Start times will be set in order to finish the dive meet about one hour before the beginning of the swim meet warm-ups.  Columbus Country Club, Jefferson and Medallion do not have dive teams so every effort will be made to schedule another team that week that is in the same situation.  More information on the Dive team schedule will be forthcoming after the dive coaches meeting in May.

The first meet is an intra-squad meet (think of it as a dress rehearsal for parents and swimmers).
Championships are for everyone.  Each swimmer may swim up to three individual events.  Each team is allowed to have only one relay per gender per age group thus many of the swimmers who have been in relays during the season will not be on one at Championships.
